Guide to Pinterest Marketing: Start with a Business Account

As a Pinterest beginner, you may be wondering whether to convert your personal account to a business account or start a new one from scratch. I recommend creating a new account specifically for your business, and here’s why:

First, your personal account’s followers are interested in what you pin personally, and they may be confused if you start pinning business-related content. Also, Pinterest only shows your pins to your followers if they pin similar content to what you are pinning. Therefore, your business pins might not reach your current followers who are not interested in your new content.

Secondly, going through your boards and pins to make sure they appeal to your ideal customer is messy and time-consuming. Even if you have a lot of followers, it is not a good idea to mix personal and business content on the same account.

Let’s start fresh and set up a new account specifically for your blog or business. It will be much easier to manage, and you can attract a new audience that is interested in your business content.

How to Setup a New Pinterest Account | Guide to Pinterest Marketing

Step 1 | Create a New Pinterest Business Account

To gain access to account analytics, rich pins, and Promoted Pins, it is essential to set up a new Pinterest business account. Visit Pinterest to create your new account.

Step 2 | Verify Your Website

Verify your website with Pinterest to access your account analytics, which provides insight about your audience, your best-performing pins, and who is pinning your content. This information is valuable, so verify your website as soon as possible.

Step 3 | Fill Out Your Profile Information

In the “Name” field, use two important keywords along with your name or business name. If you are unsure whether to use your name or business name, consider what terms people would search for to find you on Pinterest. In the bio, you have only 160 characters to explain what you do, so use your secondary keywords and include a call to action. If you do not have any freebies to offer, include your website address, which is now the only clickable link you can add to your profile.

Step 4 | Create and Optimize Your Boards

Create at least 10-15 boards related to your niche, including a dedicated board for your own pins or content that appears as the first board on your profile. Add a few boards with a cohesive look/style that shows your account’s personality. Place your most popular boards in the top two rows. Delete or hide any boards that do not suit your ideal audience or brand. Rename boards with keyword-rich names such as “Quick and Easy Dinner Recipes” instead of “Let’s Eat.” Optimize each board with a keyword-rich description to make it more searchable.

Step 5 | Follow and Repin High-Quality Content

Follow people in your niche, topics or individual boards to have relevant content to repin. Pin with your target audience in mind and consider creating boards around popular topics on Pinterest, such as quotes, DIY, decorating, crafts, and recipes. Infuse your personality into your business account while keeping a cohesive brand look. Repin high-quality content daily to help your ranking on Pinterest and for your audience. When you’re viewed as valuable, Pinterest will start showing your pins more in searches and smart feeds of your audience.
